The tall ship Spirit of New Zealand is a steel-hulled, three-masted barquentine from Auckland, New Zealand. It was purpose-built by the Spirit of Adventure Trust in 1986 for youth development. The Spirit is believed to be the world’s busiest youth training ship. She is at sea for more than 300 days a year and is owned by the Spirit of.. Over the past 50 years there have been two ships. SPIRIT OF NEW ZEALAND 1986 – CURRENT. The Trust’s current ship, the three-masted barquentine Spirit of New Zealand – Te Waka Herenga Tangata o Aotearoa, was commissioned in 1986. Since the retirement of the Adventure in 1997 she has undertaken an annual programme of up to 360 days at sea. She is believed to be the world’s busiest youth ship..
